Here is a picture a house someone has designed with variety in mind. There are a variety of shapes and directions: the chair is round, the couch and the side table is square. The stairs go diagonally yet there is a horizontal beam going across. It is a very visually busy room.
I like the variety in this image. It has many lines and shapes. Good choice :)
